Gutter Installation: What Size Gutters Do You Need?

When it comes to gutter installation, you want to ensure your gutters are the right fit for your home. There are multiple sizes of gutters, from 5” to 8”, and the size of your gutters will impact the size of your downspouts. What’s the right fit for your house? You can discuss your options with your gutter installation contractor. In the meantime, let’s break down the reasons for each size of gutters.

5” Gutters

For a long time, 5” gutters were the standard. This is wide enough to funnel water away from the roof, but not so wide as to be bulky. 5” gutters are easiest to install because of their size, and they last for years. Most homeowners who opt for this size go for downspouts that are 2”x3”, but some might choose 3”x4” in rainier climates to allow for the most efficient flow of water. Typically, 5” K-style gutters are the most cost-effective, most popular options for gutters.

6” Gutters

These are larger but still standard sized gutters, an option for climates with strong maximum rainfall intensity or homes with large roofs. They look almost indistinguishable from 5” gutters from the ground, but they can funnel more water away from the home. Further, these have more square footage, so the gutter installation might be a little more intensive, but it is often worth it once installed.

7-8” Gutters

If you need something a little more heavy-duty, you can often have custom oversized gutters installed, ranging from 7” to 8”. These gutters are not typically used for residential properties but might be used by churches or warehouses. A home with a particularly large roof area might require especially large gutters, in which case these are often custom-made. But it’s important to be sure that you need gutters of this size since gutters too large can be a waste of money and could lead to potential damage to both gutters and your home.
