Tips for Maintaining an Energy Efficient Home
Spring is finally here! And with spring often comes spring cleaning. As you go through your house, cleaning and reorganizing, you’ll eventually reach your windows. You may even come to them more purposefully. Maybe you plan to sell your home this year and you want everything to be in good shape before you do — especially your windows. Need some help getting your windows ready for spring? Here are some of our favorite tips.
Clean Windows and Window Treatments
Cleaning your windows is one of the most basic maintenance tips. Try not to use any harsh chemicals when cleaning the windows. Instead use a soft solution of vinegar and water. Spray the windows and then wipe them down with a microfiber cloth. Once the windows are clean, you can take care of the window treatments like shutters, blinds, or curtains. Wipe away any dust or stains. If you have shutters, you can freshen them with a new coat of paint or staining. You may decide that you’re not happy with your window treatments, in which case now is the time to switch them out for something better.
Liven Up With Houseplants
Looking for a burst of color or vibrance to make your windows stand out? Spring is the season when new plants are in bloom. You can bring spring inside with some lovely potted plants to place along the windowsill. Don’t have a green thumb? Consider placing low maintenance succulents in the windowsill instead. You’ll get that same vibrant, colorful effect without having to put in as much work to keep the plants alive.
Lubricate the Moving Parts
Sometimes throughout lack of use, the hinges, tracks, and locks of windows can become stiff or even rusted. With spring here, you’ll probably want to open the windows and let in some fresh air. Before you do so, make sure to lubricate moving parts with silicone lubricant to loosen them for easier operation. This will not only make it easier to open and close your windows for now, but will keep them fresh and help you to lengthen the lifespan of your windows. And it will give the impression that the windows are newer if you plan to sell the home.
