What to Do About a Roof Leak

What to Do About a Roof Leak

No one wants to have to deal with a roof leak. After all, the point of a “roof over your head” is the security of knowing that the outside elements stay out. Still, roof leaks can occur, and when that happens, you want to act immediately to take care of them. Hesitance in fixing roof leaks can lead to damage with the electrical wiring or structural integrity of your home. Today, let’s discuss roof leaks and what you can do about them.

What Causes Roof Leaks?

Roof leaks can be caused by a number of issues. Broken shingles or flashing in your roof can occur over time or through pressure from a storm, and these can lead to roof leaks. If your attic has too much window condensation, this can also weaken your roof and lead to roof leaks. If your roof is poorly maintained or has been neglected for years, there’s a good chance that it will start to leak.

How to Spot a Roof Leak

Before you know what to do about a roof leak, you should be able to determine whether or not you have one. You can spot a potential roof leak by taking a look at your roof and inspecting for missing shingles or loose flashing. You can also check the attic for any signs of water damage, as this more than likely indicates a roof leak. And if you notice water stains on the ceiling or unexpectedly high heating and cooling bills without poor insulation issues, the reason could be a roof leak.

What to Do About Roof Leaks

If you have a roof leak, don’t panic. With a clear head and a helpful roofer, you can easily handle the roof leak and seal your roof up. First, use plastic covering to protect the area from water damage. Next, remove any water. Have a clear waterproof container ready to hold the water from the leak. If you notice any bubbling paint, burst this as well, as there’s likely to be water contained within. Finally, call a roofer to fix the issue causing the leak — or to replace your roof altogether — and seal the leak from within.
